August Gardening To Do List!

Preparing for fall can be a busy time for any gardener. This is the time of year when you get to decide what worked, and what didn’t in your garden, and decide what to do to make it better next year. We have put together a simple to-do list for you gardeners preparing for the fall.

Pull Weeds: Removing weeds before they can seed into your garden will help prevent weeds from over taking your garden in the winter. Apply an inch to 2 inches of mulch to prevent the weeds from growing as quickly, and prominently.

Remove spent flowers: Remove old blooms from your roses, annuals, and perennials. This will allow them to bloom again in the early fall.

Prune: Remove dead branches on shrubs and trees, this will help them survive the winter, and look much cleaner in your yard.

Water: water your new plants (from the last six months) during hot days to keep them from drying out.

Have your soil tested: A soil test can help you determine how you can improve your garden for next year. Specifically, by supplementing nutrients that are lacking in your soil.

Order Spring Bulbs: Ordering your tulips and daffodils early will mean that you are prepared to plant them when the soil cools down enough for them. Most suppliers will get them out to you at the right time to plant in fall.

Start seeds for fall crops: Plant any crops you plan to grow this fall that can handle a light frost such as spinach, lettuce, and greens.
