How to Care for Poinsettias! Red Marble Poinsettia

From soft shades of pink and white to bold and robust reds, the Poinsettia is easily one of the most recognizable Holiday Season plants in America. However, as popular as they may be, many plant owners don’t know how to care for this Holiday must-have.

Cinnamon Star PoinsettiaFirst, when considering a Poinsettia purchase, make sure you choose one with nice white roots, dark green foliage, colored floral bracts, and no sign of distress or shock.

When learning how to care for Poinsettias, it is very important to understand where they come from.

Poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima cvs.are native to Mexico, so they naturally prefer tropical climate conditions. This means no exposure to cold temperatures as this could result in the death of your new Poinsettia. They prefer daytime temperatures between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and nighttime temperatures between 55 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit – any colder could damage your plant. It is best to keep your Poinsettia in a very sunny location, such as near a south facing window or sliding glass door. Remember to move it away from the window at night during Fall and Winter months as to not expose it to cold temperatures or drafts.

Mars Marble PoinsettiaFinally, make sure your Poinsettia’s soil has good drainage and remains moist but not over-watered. Water well when the soil feels dry, but be sure not to soak or flood the soil. Over-saturation could cause root rot or other detrimental diseases. If you live in a very dry climate, you may want to consider using a humidifier in the same room as your Poinsettia to keep it properly hydrated.

When you know how to case for Poinsettias, they can keep the Winter blues at bay with lasting seasonal color!

TIP: For an even more striking display, try other fun varieties like Winter Blush, Cinnamon Star, or Mars Marble Poinsettias!
